Hampton Bays has developed a reputation as nightlife “party central” for the youth crowd, but the truth is, it’s a welcoming town with room for just about everyone from families to people of all ages looking for good clean fun.

Known as “Good Ground” until 1922, the first settlers’ homes were built there in the 1700s, including the famous landmark, the Canoe Place Inn.

Since the 1890s, the Shinnecock Canal with its famous locks has provided access for boats traveling between Peconic Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. The Hurricane of 1938 created the Shinnecock Inlet which connects Shinnecock Bay and Tiana Bay with the Atlantic.

With all that stunning waterfront property, it’s no wonder that Hampton Bays is a haven for swimmers, boaters and fishermen. It is home to the second largest commercial fishing fleet in New York State. There’s no better place around to sample fresh lobster, clams or fish than at a Hampton Bays restaurant right on the bay or oceanfront.

Hampton Bays is a year-round community with numerous accommodations and quaint shops. The Hampton Bays Chamber of Commerce is always there to offer information about this charming seaside hamlet.

Major Attractions

Shinnecock Inlet. The Shinnecock Inlet, formed by the 1938 hurricane, is an ideal spot to find striped bass or bluefish. This area is also a favorite of skin divers and sailors. There are a number of well-staffed and fully equipped yacht clubs and marinas in the vicinity.

Shinnecock Canal & Canoe Place. Canoe Place, the original place of portage for the Shinnecock Indians and their canoes, was the narrowest piece of land between Peconic and Shinnecock Bays prior to the 1892 completion of the Shinnecock Canal, where public dockage is now available. The Canoe Place Inn, built in 1750 and once famous as a vacation spot for well-known politicians and celebrities, still occupies its original spot along the canal as The Whitehouse  nightclub.
